What is traffic intersection preemption?

Traffic intersection preemption is a system that allows emergency vehicles to override normal traffic signals, granting them right-of-way at intersections. This system is crucial for enhancing safety during emergencies, as it reduces driver error and prevents congestion.
When used properly, Preemption can lead to a significant reduction in response times and collision rates, especially for emergency vehicles.

We also offer a huge safety advantage over other preemption systems called the Visual Verification Lights that let drivers/spotters know that when they see a WHITE LIGHT that they have dedicated preemption while the other directions at the intersection will see a BLUE LIGHT indicating to them that preemption has been triggered in another direction, and to be extra careful entering the intersection knowing there may be another emergency vehicle in the area.

Sonem 2000 System

The Sonem 2000 preemption works in 2 ways:

  • The Sonem 2000 system picks up the sound and frequency of the approaching emergency vehicle. The system then sends a signal to the traffic control, not controlled by us, and proceeds to change the traffic signal green for the approaching emergency vehicle. This does NOT give the driver the authority to just barrel through the intersection, but to allow other traffic to get out of your way safely and to try and stop any vehicles coming into the intersection. We recommend using the YELP siren mode as we can pick up the sounds waves quicker.
  • The SONEM 2000 then picks up the siren coming out of the intersection and sends a signal to the traffic controller to shut off the preemption, to allow other emergency services to use the Sonem 2000 system as usually there is a need for more than one emergency vehicle at a scene. We ask that you use the same siren mode YELP going into the system as you are exiting the intersection.

Visual Verification Lights

The Visual Verification Lights or "VV Lights", act as a secondary safety measure for the driver/spotter. As the driver has a lot to deal with driving, we ask that spotters help in determining the color of the Visual Verification Light. There are 2 indication lights, 1 light is a white light, the other is a blue light. When Preemption has been determined in a certain direction and we send the signal to the control, we show a WHITE LIGHT to the driver/spotter of the emergency vehicle to let them know that they have dedicated preemption and a green light should be coming soon. The other 3 directions show other drivers a BLUE LIGHT indicating to them that to be extra cautious when approaching/entering the intersection has we have given the traffic controller a dedicated preemption in a different direction.
