Hazards of Diesel Exhaust Fumes

Diesel exhaust fumes pose serious health hazards to anyone who works in an environment where diesel fuel fumes enter the air. This is the case for many emergency response personnel. Removal of diesel exhaust is necessary in fire and rescue stations, emergency medical service facilities, ambulance facilities, first aid squads, as well as fleet maintenance bays, garages, public work garages and whereever there is diesel exhaust.

Using AirMATION® in your Fire and EMS Rescue Stations not only creates a safer and healthier environment but also will reduce absenteeism, improve morale, and enhance productivity.

Diesel exhaust is a mixture of gases, oxides and particulate matter. Appendix A lists the composition of diesel exhaust in detail.

The airborne particles in diesel exhaust carry cancer-causing substances known as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Gases in diesel exhaust, such as nitrous oxide, formaldehyde, benzene, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide also create health problems such as emphysema.

As an example of the adverse health effects, exposure to carbon monoxide is known to cause asphyxiation and anoxia. Symptoms of acute CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, collapse, even coma and death. Exposure to SO2 may result in broncho-constriction, fatigue, altered sense of smell, and the symptoms of chronic bronchitis. More information on harmful effects of diesel exhaust fumes can be found in Appendix B.

You may make an appointment for a free on-site consultation and evaluation of your facilities for removal of diesel exhaust and soot. We'll provide you with a station layout plan and recommendations in a written proposal, to help you make the decision that's right for your fire station, fire department, EMS buildings and fleet maintenance.
